How to create your daily morning ritual

Creating a morning routine can help you start your day off on the right foot. This doesn’t just help you be more productive and get more done, but it can also improve your mood and help re-align you with what lights you up, what’s most important to you. It can help you focus your attention and energy on staying on track with any goals and dreams you’re working towards.

Here are my personal favorite ways to create a daily morning ritual:

Create an inner-peace moment

A morning ritual is your chance to start off the day investing in your biggest asset, yourself. Your daily practice of self-care can help you create balance between productivity and happiness. I suggest thinking about mind and body when choosing what your daily rituals will look like. For example, you can choose to do a series of morning streches or a short session of yoga to maintain flexibility. Spending some time outdoors can also be very energizing. My body ritual consists of going for a 30 minute walk along the river path near by home. I find being near the water helps me feel calm and removes the distractions from my mind. I love being near nature and feeling at peace as I take deep breaths and get my body moving. Or, maybe for you a more intense run or workout session might help energize you for the day. This is your time to focus only on you, leave out any personal or work issues you need to deal with and completely disconnect. The point of creating these moments is to take a break from your mind. If you’re like me, it probably runs a mile a minute. Give yourself a mental rest and focus on what’s around you. Find the beauty in your immediate environment. Feel the wind on your face as you take in everything.

Feed your body

I can’t stress the importance of eating something healthy before you start your day. Many of us skip breakfast because we feel like we don’t have time, but if you choose foods that are grab and go, like fruits or a handful of nuts, or if you have frozen fruits and some yogurt or dairy alternative ready to go for your smoothie, you can get into the daily habit of eating healthy before you start your work day.

Here are two of my favorite smoothie recipes:

One peeled orange cut in wedges (sweet) + 1 cup of Pom juice + A sprinkle of cinnamon + a little water to take the edge off

A cup of oat milk + A dash of vanilla extract, 1 handful of blueberries (or other berry), 1 half of a frozen banana

For some of us, coffee, tea or herbal infusions are something we can’t live without. You can make this part of your morning ritual too. I love to have my morning ginger tea and a smoothie, followed by a big glass of lemon water. I take my time and surf the web for fun, no depressing news, no work emails. The other important way to feed your body is by drinking water. Hydrating your body every morning will help you regain your balance after not having consumed water for 6 to 8 hours. It can even help reduce headaches or hunger throughout the day.

Practice daily mindset exercises

This can be different for each person. Essentially, mindset practice is a daily repetition of mantras or affirmations which can act as powerful statements and teach your brain to focus on the things you want to achieve, and believe it can be done. This is something I teach in my course on Setting Goals and Manifesting Desires. Check the link at the bottom if you’re curious. Stay tuned for more articles here about using mindset exercises to transform your life and become a happier person.

Mindset practice can help you shift your day away from any doubts and fears, and focus your mind towards positivity and strength. There are so many out there, too many to list here. But, here’s one way you can set your intention towards what you want in life and move away from thinking about what you don’t want:

Write down on a small piece of paper 3 things you’d like to achieve before the end of the year. Now fold the paper in half and place it in your pocket. At the end of the day, take out the piece of paper, read it outloud, and put it on your nightstand. In the morning, grab the paper again, read it outloud, and put it in your pocket. Do this everyday and you will find your mind focuses more easily on the things you want rather than on the things you don’t.

Breathe and meditate

This is why I love taking a walk near the river, fresh air! Taking in a few deep breathes before beginning your day can help you have more focus, reduce any tension in your body, and help you get into your body before you get into your mind. It can be as simple as taking three deep breathes, or you can have a more intense practice of doing power breathing if you prefer.

Whatever feels right to you is how you should tackle your morning practices and rituals. Your intuition can help you figure out the right practices and actions for you. This is why a daily morning meditation of 10 or 15 minutes can be so powerful. Spending time on your mind is just as important as exercising and taking care of your body. A daily short meditation can really help you get your day started right. Meditation helps you clear away overthinking and distracting thoughts so you can gain more clarity. It also has the effect of reducing anxiety and calming your body.

Generally speaking, it’s always best to put these rituals into practice in the morning to get your day off to the right start. But you can also have a nightime ritual to help you unwind and reconnect with yourself. Or you can do some rituals in the morning, and others at night. Choose things that feel right for you, and make them part of your daily schedule. You can fit all of these suggestions into about one hour. While this might mean getting up a little earlier for some of us who like to hit the snooze button, you’ll be thankful that you made these activities part of your routine. They say it takes 3 months to turn a new practice into a habit. Let me know below if you tried any of these and how they turned out!
